GeoNet concluded its activity with its Final Workshop that took place 29 January 2010 in INRIA’s premises in Paris, France. IPv6 GeoNetworking was presented together with its link with the related ITS development in CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium, CVIS implementation and ETSI TC ITS standardization. Moreover the functionalities of IPv6 GeoNetworking was shown in a real system including 3 cars, 2 road-side units and a control center. A (very simple) enhanced driver awareness application was demonstrated and numerous attendees could enjoy a ride to see the achievement.
The FP7-funded European project GeoNet designed, implemented, tested and pushed for standardization an IPv6 GeoNetworking architecture related to many other major initiatives like CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium and CVIS.

The GeoNet project aims at providing a standard solution for IPv6 geonetworking to all Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), relying on the IPv6 standard and on Car-to-Car Communication Consortium’s (C2C-CC) geonetworking.
The D1.2 deliverable “Final GeoNet Architecture” describes the architecture, improved since the 1st release of GeoNet architecture (D1.1) by feedback from standardization organizations and from implementation phase. It is complementary to D2.2 “Final GeoNet Specification”.

The GeoNet consortium invites you to attend its final workshop as a unique opportunity to learn more about IPv6 geonetworking and the link between IPv6 geonetworking and the related ITS development in CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium, CVIS implementation and ETSI TC ITS standardization. During the workshop you will get information through communications and posters and also see the system working in real cars.

GeoNet organized its first workshop during ITST09. GeoNet presented its scientific and technological work with both a special session and experimental demonstrations that attracted many attention. It raised awareness of the question of IPv6 geonetworking and also the link between this problem and the current ITS development, e.g. CVIS implementation of CALM and CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium 802.11p developments.
The 9th International Conference on ITS Telecommunications was held on October 20-22, 2009 in LILLE (North of France). It was attended by engineers and scientists in the field of New Technology of Information and Communication for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).

The D2.1 deliverable “Specifications – 1st release” is describing the 1st release of GeoNet specifications. It is the basis for GeoNet implementation, and will be subsequently revised based on the feedback from implementation phase.

The networked car: boosting early IPv6 adoption

Next generation of vehicles will be networked in order to exchange safety, non-safety and infotainment information with other vehicles, the roadside and peers in the Internet. Internet-based communications will rely on IPv6, the new version of the Internet Protocol, which is already in the product line of major vendors (networking devices and operating systems) and deployed in backbones (GEANT, OpenTransit,…)
IPv6 is already taking momentum in the automobile sector as could it be witnessed by the CVIS and GeoNet European projects and standardization activities by ISO TC204 WG16 (CALM architecture), ETSI, and the Car-to-Car Communication Consortium (C2C-CC).
Following the European Commission’s IPv6 action plan issued in May 2008, the objective of the session is to discuss how IPv6 know-how could be best developed in Europe.
The session will gather speakers from:
- The GeoNet project
- The CVIS project
- C2C-CC
- ETSI
- European Commission

GeoNet project launched

To increase the road safety in Europe while traffic and driver’s concentration demand also rises, the EC and the automotive industry have committed to halve the life loss by 2010. The GeoNet project will significantly contribute to this goal by implementing a reference specification of a geographic addressing and routing protocol with support for IPv6 to be used to deliver safety messages between cars but also between cars and the roadside infrastructure within a designated destination area.

While the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium has invested significant effort into the specification of a car-to-car communications mechanism suitable for safety applications, its mandate does not extend beyond defining a specification. At the same time, ongoing projects like SafeSpot would need an actual implementation to rely on whereas other such as CVIS are developing a communication architecture relying on the maintenance of a constant access to the Internet over IPv6.
GeoNet shall bring the basic results from the work of the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium to the next step, by further improving these specifications and creating a baseline software implementation interfacing with IPv6. The goal of GeoNet is thus to implement and formally test a networking mechanism as a standalone software module which can be incorporated into Cooperative Systems. This implementation shall enable transparent IP connectivity between a vehicle and the infrastructure, even in cases when delivery must be hopped over several vehicles or cached along the way. GeoNet not only benefits from previous work within these projects, but also will provide a support for the integration of its solution. This collaboration is sketched in support letters.
Once GeoNet fulfils the existing implementation gap of geo-addressed networking, ongoing and future projects for Cooperative Systems can maintain their focus on architecture design, application development and field trials.
